Waiting for Spring to Arrive

I am so tired of winter! Mother nature is playing a trick on us here in Portland this year. It is going to snow here tonight! Snow this late in February is really rare for us.
I've been so ready for spring I couldn't help but make some fresh springy amigurumi. I originally started out making a snail for a swap at Ravelry but I loved it so much that I made another for myself. The white on the snail shell glows in the dark and so does the leaf one of the snails is sitting on. The mushroom didn't turn out as well as I expected but it was fun to make.

I've also made a purple bunny (it's the year of the rabbit now!).

This has been such a busy fall! I've been working really hard trying to raise as much money as I can for my son's 8th Spanish class trip to Spain in June. The class is going to spend 2 weeks there with host families and take spanish classes. Plus they get to go on tours of the area and visit some really nice looking beaches. I'm really excited for him! He worked very hard on his application. Only 18 of the students will be picked to go so we are anxiously awaiting the final pick.
In other news.. My husband is out of a job. The crappy economy forced Hollywood video to bankrupt! My husband worked at it's corporate office. So now he's on unemployment and there are just no jobs available in his field (real estate lease administration). I think I'm going to have to go back to work after being a stay at home mom for almost 9 years! It's scary!! I have absolutely no idea what I want to do. The last job I had was working as a R-Zone (electronics/video games) department manager for Toys R Us and before that I worked in a department store for almost 5 years. I'm not sure if I really want to go back into retail.
Anyhow here are a few projects that I've worked on lately.

Better late than never..

It's been a long time since I've blogged! There's a lot to update...
My husband and I have been playing Final Fantasy XI again. We had taken a short break. On our 13th wedding anniversary we finally got married in the game. Pretty silly right? But it was fun and cute!

Last month a did another Ravelry $10 amigurumi swap. The theme was Hybrid Animals. So I made a Bunny/Seal using the Mimi Seal pattern from Amigurumi Collection Vol. 8. I used some Bernat Glow in the Dark yarn. I LOVE that yarn. It's so fun to work with. Bernat discontinued it though. I have about 10 skeins left of it.

I also made a chick for my swap partner. I winged this one (haha). I should have written down a pattern as I made it.

I made this last amigurumi for Easter but it is still available for purchase in my shop. I also winged this one also... next time I promise to take notes for a pattern.. This was the first time I've used chenille yarn and I was very happy with the results.

I have so many project I want to do... but I have too many half finished projects started. I'm working on a Hexagon blanket, lacey gloves, a tonberry amigurumi & a frog amigurumi. Plus I have a whale & a bird amigurumi finished just waiting to have their photos taken. So much to do and so little time!

I was sick and tired of having messy lopsided balls of left over yarn.. tired of trying to roll them up.. sooooooo I bought myself a yarn winder!
I didn't want to pay Jo-Ann's $33.99 + sh so I went over to trusty eBay and found one for only $10.51. They sold it as "vintage" but it looks like the exact model from Jo-Ann's and it is like new!
I've had so much fun today making neat little skins of left over yarn. Now my stash will be neat and tidy, making yarn so much easier to pick out!

Wow it's been a long time since i've blogged! I've been just way too busy... I haven't had much time to craft... but here's what I have been able to work on..
My youngest son wanted a brown tiger.. so I had to try out a pattern from Amigurumi Collection Vol.7.

I had some scraps of wool that were just too narrow for cozies so I used them to make a couple cupcake pincushions.

Totoro Costume, Snow Bunny & I Won A Hoodie

Last month I wanted to make a Totoro costume for my youngest son. He loves Totoro, but the said a costume would be too girly. He ended up being a ninja for Halloween. I still wanted to make that costume so bad. I ended up making a amigurumi using that idea. It was made for a swap over at Ravelry. I'm really happy with the way he turned out. I used the same design for the body as I did with the V Baby from my last post.

Have you ever looked at something you've created a long time ago and think.. I can make that better?! I did that the other day and preformed a major face lift on my Snow Bunny amigurumi. I cut off the muzzle, redid the mouth, sewed the muzzle back on with a bit of stuffing and fixed the eye patches. She looks like a new woman now (I mean bunny).

Yesterday I received an unexpected package in the mail. It was a hoodie from a Mountain Dew drawing that I had entered! It's really cute! I love the gorilla on it! This picture makes the hoodie look grey, but it is really black.

Revenge of the V Baby

Have you heard about ABC remaking the classic V alien miniseries from the 80's? I loved the old series so much! I remember watching it as a child. Staring in aw at the special effects (lol) and I was shocked when the green Alien baby popped out during Robin's C section! I hope ABC's new remake can live up to the classic series.....
The anticipation got the better of me and I made my own version of the green alien baby. This one is just a bit cuter than the original! He has hand painted sparkle eyes, embroidered fangs and glow in the dark eye patches. Glow in the dark yarn is so fun to work with!

I've also had time to make a few more coffee cozies. The hippo and robot cozies have already sold!

Button Eyes

Have you ever used button eyes for your amigurumi? I've always used safety eyes until I fell in love with a few patterns from Handmade Knit Amigurumi (大好きなあみぐるみ). Dachshund (いたずらっこのダックスフント), Button eyed Rabbit and Bear (ボタン目のうさぎとくま). I've only made the bear so far, but the Dachshund may be coming in the future. It's so darn cute!
I made the bear for a amigurumi swap over at Ravelry. September's theme was fruit so I added some strawberry buttons and crochet a big strawberry for her to hold. The pattern for the strawberry was from Amigurumi!: Super Happy Crochet Cute by Elisabeth Doherty. It was an easy pattern but adding the seed beads was tedious(although well worth it!).
This months swap is Halloween! I already know what I'm going to make but it's a secret.
Yesterday my computer arrived back from the repair shop! It seems to be back to it's old self. I spent most of yesterday updating Windows and putting programs like FFXI back on it. Luckly I had a chance to save all my files and photos, so I had to get those back on there too. Phew what a day! I even had to go flag down the Fedex driver to get the computer! >< They always have a hard time finding our house. He had to back up from halfway down the street.

Crochet-Along Pandas

Last week I finished up my panda for the Craftzine Crochet-Along. The pattern was made by the fantastic Tamie Snow from Roxycraft. She made some wonderful video tutorials that really helped with the crocheting process.
My panda was looking pretty lonely so I reduced the pattern down a bit and made her a lil baby. I also made a bamboo twig (they need to eat right).
Today they announced the giveaway winners and I won a signed copy of Tamie's Tiny Yarn Animals! Yay!!! All the pandas everyone made at the flicker group were so adorable!!
Dead computer update: Last time I blogged I was in the process of shipping my computer to the Gateway Repair Center... What a pain!!! Computer's are so hard to ship. Finding a box it would fit in was terrible. On the bright side it only took 4 days for the package to reach the Repair Center (gotta love FedEx) and the repair center only spent 3 days with it and mailed it back. It should arrive here on the 1st! I cannot wait!

Sea Critters & the Dead Computer!

Last month I joined an amigurumi swap group at Ravelry. That months theme was Sea Animals. My swap partner made me some adorable fishies that were her very own pattern. ^^ So for my swap I made an Orange Sea Otter from Amigurumi Collection Vol.7 and a baby Sea Turtle from Amigurumi Two, Crocheted Toys for Me, You and Baby Too. I loved how the Sea Otter turned out! So I made another one. This time in blue! I also made a little basket to put him in. The pattern was a free pdf from Pierrot.

Last week my computer started to freeze up and then completely died on me! Luckily I had enough warning to back up all my files. It's still under warranty and I have to mail it to Gateway for repairs.... this is going to take forever. Right now I'm on my kids Mac.. I can also use my husband's Dell (he has a suckish mouse ><). I still miss mine though.. it's just not the same. Also I cannot play FFXI since my husband plays. Taking turns is not so much fun.

A Japanese Paradise!

Last weekend we went to the Portland Japanese Garden and to the Portland's Rose Gardens. It was our first trip to the Japanese Garden and I was very impressed. The kids had a fun time exploring. I really could have spent a few hours there looking at EVERYTHING.. but we had a 2pm Beaver's baseball game to get to. The Beaver's lost.. oh well.

I've been so busy during the summer I haven't had much time for my crafting. But I have managed to make a few things.

Hot Summer Days! Poor Chibi Totoro!

Portland is having a heat wave! It hasn't been so hot here since 1981... Yesterday the high temp was 106. Yikes! It's not supposed to be so hot here. Plus it's very humid so it feels worse. We don't have AC so as you can imagine it gets pretty hot inside our house. Yesterday it got up to 96!! It's a good thing we have a semi finished basement that we've made into a family room. It stays much cooler down there. So the boys and I have been chilling in the basement watching movies. This has also given me a chance to work on a few craft projects that I have neglected.

Poor Chibi Totoro had been sitting on my desk for six months with only the felt around his eyes needing to be sewn down. I made Chibi for my oldest son and he was so happy for me to finally finish it!

I took Chibi's picture on one of our pumpkin plant's giant leaves... Yay for miracle grow! We don't have any pumpkins growing on the vine yet but without a doubt if they survive this heat we will have giant pumpkins too!

Little Fawn (Bambi)

While I was up in Seattle in February I picked up a copy of Amigurumi Collection Vol. 7 from the very large Kinokuniya Bookstore located inside Seattle's Uwajimaya. I wasn't as thrilled with this volume as I have been in the past with some of the other collections. However, there are a few really cute patterns!

This is the one that made me buy the book.. Bambi!

If you ever use this pattern I recommend using something to weigh her backside down a bit. Like plastic pellets. This one is top heavy, but she will stand if you place her legs just right.

Spring Sewing

I've been neglecting the blog again.. so much to do so little time. It's spring and with that comes spring cleaning, yard work and a lot of school projects. I however have not been neglecting my crafting.

Lately I've been using my sewing machine a bit more than normal. I found 2 purse patterns that I just had to give a try. The first one I saw on the Martha Stewart show a long time ago and just now finally used it. It's a little reversible bag. Super simple and easy to make. I used coordinating Michael Miller China Doll fabric. The reverse side is black with colorful umbrellas. I found the tutorial for this second purse on Craftster. http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=149376.0 It's a pleated tote. I'd been looking online for a pattern like this for awhile. Everything was either too expensive or looked to complicated for a novice like me. This tutorial was very well written and super easy! I used some decorater fabric I found in the remnant bin at the Joann superstore (my favorite place to find fabric).

Lacy Crochet

I've had this book sitting around forever... Kyuuto! Japanese Crafts: Lacy Crochet. I was afraid to crochet anything from it because I've never really used crochet thread before. It looked so tiny, delicate and difficult! So I gave in and tried it out... and ta da! I love it!!
I made the crochet hook case first. So simple and fast to crochet. The part that killed me was using the sewing machine for the liner. I seriously need to practice my sewing skills!

The scissors case was a bit harder.. and only because I made it harder by wanting to use matching fabric. So I didn’t use felt as the pattern called for. I ironed my fabric onto a heavy duty interfacing. It made it stiff and sturdy so the point of the scissors won’t make a hole in the fabric.

I'll be doing more things from this book! Maybe a case for my mom!

Kitten and Mouse buddies

I've been wanting to make this kitten and mouse from Amigurumi no Nakamatachi for awhile... and I finally got around to it. I crochet the kitten with Bernat Galaxy yarn.. a lumpy loopy furry yarn. It was really hard to work with but I'm happy with the look it gave her. The mouse was crochet with a nice soft wool.. a nice change after the crazy kitten's yarn.
Both patterns we pretty simple. But I did do a change up on the mouse's ears. It called for gluing on felt ears. I didn't like the way that was going to look so I crochet a couple ears instead.

Seattle Vacation!

Over Valentines weekend my family took a train up to Seattle. We had a wonderful time! Taking the train was really relaxing too.
If you love Japanese products and you are ever in downtown Seattle you must stop in at the Daiso in the Westlake Center. It's a Japanese shop and everything is super cheap. Most things are only $1.50! If I had brought an extra suitcase with me I would have bought a ton of things.. but since I had limited space this is all that I got...

We went shopping at Macy's and I finally got the Harajuku Lovers fragrance I've been wanting.. it came with a free tote bag. We also went to Pike's place were I found a Tokidoki Cactus Pup.

Before our trip we bought a Flip camcorder.. so I made a little video montage of our trip. Enjoy!

Meet Mr. Moo! Another amigurumi made from a pattern in Amigurumi & Komono. This guy was really fun to make. The pattern was pretty easy. Only the legs were were tough since they are crochet as part of the torso instead of being crochet separately and then sewn on. I gave him a pair of my purple hand painted eyes. I didn't like the bib's flower the pattern called for so I just sewed on a yellow star. Lazy lazy me.

Becky from SMALL TIME SHOPPING contacted me about doing a trade. She had some really adorable handmade accessories. It was hard to choose what to pick from her shop but I ended up picking an adorable bee hairpin & 2 kitty charms. She even included an extra doggie charm and some really cute magnets.
She wanted a black sheep like the one I had previously sold.. only with a pink scarf. So I cloned her a sheep!

Last week I was over at my mom's house and she showed me her new cookbook holder. As soon as I saw it I knew it would be the most perfect book holder for amigurumi books. Whenever I am crocheting from a pattern in a Japanese book I am constantly looking down at the diagram. Sometimes (especially when the book is new) it will end up shutting. What a pain! I mentioned to my mom that I was going to go buy one.. she went out and bought one for me! She is absolutely the greatest mom in the world and I am spoiled rotten (so are my own kids). This darling amigurumi may be a black sheep but she's no disreputable member of the family. Another wonderful pattern from Amigurumi no Nakamatachi. Usually I'll make one amigurumi from a book and then put it away for awhile.. but this book has really got me hooked (please disregard the pun). I'm also eyeing the cat pattern, but I promised my son I'd make him a white Totoro and then there is the wool I ordered for needle felting that has arrived. So it's time to but the book away.

Froggy

Here's another amigurumi I made with a pattern from Amigurumi no Nakamatachi. What a great book! Froggy was really fast to make. The hardest part of the pattern to figure out was the toes. I used the last pair of my hand painted neon green eyes. I went to paint more today and found my whole set of neon paint was dried up an crusty. Looks like I'll have to hunting for more of that. I did end up painting some more of my glitter eyes, since that paint was still in good!

Hedgehogs are the cutest!

I love hedgehogs! They are just the cutest lil things! When I saw the hedgehog pattern in Amigurumi no Nakamatachi I just had to make it! The pattern was fairly simple to follow so I'll most likely be making more of these fellows in the future. I used Bernat Alpaca Natural Blends yarn in ebony for his back and I was really happy with the texture it made!

Fuzzy Bunny

Needle Felting!

Around Thanksgiving I ordered a small needle felting kit from Jo-Ann's. I finally had a chance to try it out over the holiday break and I totally fell in love with it. The end result was this cutie little kitty.
Needle felting is addictive! Poking wool over and over with a VERY sharp needle is really fun and really therapeutic in a way, lol. I only jabbed my finger once... trust me once you jab it after that you are very careful not to do it again. This is not something I can work on while the kids are at home. I know they will distract me and I'll jab myself!
My mom gave me a $40 Jo-Ann's gift card for Christmas and I ordered a ton of wool in a whole range of colors. So be prepared to see more needle felted cuties coming real soon!

'Twas a Crafty Christmas & A Lucky New Year!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone!
Our family had a lovely white Christmas... thankfully the snow melted by New Years!
My husband bought me a wonderful set of James Bond movies (I LOVE 007, hehe). And I bought him the Complete V collection and a "The Killer's" t-shirt. The kids bought me a book "Amigurumi & Komono"!! I was really lucky this year!
We got the kids the usual video games and toys they asked for.. plus I made them each a crafty gift.

For my youngest son I made Totoro. Following a pattern from http://heavens-hellcat.livejournal.com/420.html. I used felt for the tummy and around the eyes instead of crocheting. I was pretty happy with the way he turned out except.. his arms look a bit to buff! Tayler absolutely loved him and now wants me to make the little white Totoro and a Soot Sprite too.

My older son Skyler has wanted a real sock monkey for a long time and this summer I was lucky enough to find "Create your own sock monkey" project at a yard sale last summer. It even had the real Rockford Red Heel socks. The pattern was pretty simple and the hardest part was just trying to cut the socks up in the proper way.

A couple weeks ago I was lucky enough to win a give away from Berrysprite. It included 2 cutie pencils, 2 bento sauce containers, a zipper pouch (that were the perfect size for my Clover crochet hooks, woot!) and one of her new Bearlets! Wowies is he a cutie! Berryspite is just now putting these Bearlets out in her shop and I highly recommend them. Great quality workmanship and they are soooooooooo freaking adorable!!

Cabin Fever!

Well the big snow storm the weatherman forecasted hit us hard and will not let up! It's been snowing and freezing rain on and off since Sunday. Plus we are supposed to get another 3-4 inches of snow tomorrow. Having a white Christmas sure is going to be nice but... My husband has missed over a week of work.. with no pay. Plus the garbage isn't being collected because the trucks do not have chains. All over the city people are losing power because the ice from the freezing rain is making trees and branches fall. Our neighbor's tree fell and came really close to hitting our other car.
The family is starting to have cabin fever too, lol. We walked over to the Post Office and grocery store yesterday. We saw about 5 cars and a bus stuck in the snow. They all had chains on but the snow is just too deep and there is that pesky layer of ice underneath.
The kids are having a blast with it at least! They went sledding down our hill today!

Hiro, Crafty Wonderland & the Crazy Snow Week.

A couple months ago I bought a really cute Amigurumi book.. 大好きなあみぐるみ (Handmade Knit Amigurumi ISBN:9784277172240) from the Portland Kinokuniya book store. It's out in Beaverton on Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy inside the Uwajimaya grocery store. I absolutely love this store and could spend hours browsing through it. Anyway.. I finally finished making the first amigurumi from that book. I named him Hiro (yes as in Hiro from Hero's, lol).

Last Sunday was Crafty Wonderland's Super Colossal Holiday Sale at the convention center. 125 tables of crafty goodness. I'd been planning to go to this for months and when the day finally came so did the snow!! It rarely snows here in Portland. The mountains around us usually get all the snow.. but here on the valley snow it only happens a few times a year and then it's normally just a trace. But Sunday it snowed a lot! We had to take the train to avoid driving in it. The line to get in was still pretty short by the time we got there and we even ended up getting goody bags. I was really surprised how much really cool things were in them.. books.. hair goodies.. a sake cup.. yeah it was the bomb. Totally worth the snowy trip to get there and it wasn't as busy as I was expecting. The booths were all really cool and I bought a really cute ceramic coaster with a bunny and squirrel for my computer table.

It kept snowing and melting then freezing all week on and off! The kids didn't have school on Monday, Wednesday or Friday because of the snow and ice. And now the weatherman is forecasting more snow for tomorrow and calling it the biggest storm of the year! The nice thing about it is that tomorrow is my youngest son's 7th birthday and he is really exciting to go sledding!

Sunday was my 31st birthday! Another year older and another year I can say.. I don't feel older than I did the year before. It might be because strangers tend to think I'm younger than I am. Last week I went shopping with my mom and the gal that rang up my purchase started to ask if I wanted to sign up for the store credit card and then she stopped in the middle of her spiel and asked how old I was.. like I wasn't 18 yet. Stuff like that has always happened to me. Like the time I was out with my kids and my parents and someone thought my children were my little brothers. It used to bother me.. but now it's really nice! :D
So to celebrate this year's birthday my husband took me out for a child free evening of fun. We went to see the new James Bond movie. Quantum of Solace. I'm a huge OO7 fan. Is it any wonder I married a guy who's nickname is 7 (because of his birthday o7/07/77). Then we did a little shopping at the mall and went out to a yummy dinner at Red Robin. On the way home we went and picked up doughnuts at Krispy Kreme.. because I'm not a big cake fan.
To top everything off I got a couple of really wonderful birthday gifts this year. My husband and kids got me a set of Sookie Stackhouse novels, you may know it better as TrueBlood on HBO. The books are way better than the show, but I still love the show too!

My mom bought me the cutest TokiDoki bag. Graziosa in the Carnival print. I've been wanting this messenger bag forever! Thanks mom!

I've finally made something with the Bernat Glow in the Dark yarn I bought a while ago. Meet Jules the Amigurumi snail. The pattern for this cutie came from 100倍かわいいあみぐるみ―2日で編める、かぎ針あみ
The glow in the dark yarn is so cool! I'm surprised how well it really glows. I've bought a ton of it!

Past Projects

Since I had most of my past projects showcased on my old blog and in my Myspace photos I thought I should add them here in a slideshow. As I was putting it together it really hit me that I've crafted a lot of things!! I guess it really adds up overtime. I have a few new projects that I am working on and some that have been finished and are just waiting for me to take photos of. Lazy me.. I'll get to it real soon. As for now please enjoy the slide show of my past projects!

Welcome to my new blog on Blogger. I was using the blog on my MySpace account but it was a real pain to work with and I've heard really nice things about Blogger... So I made the switch and here I am!

Yesterday was Halloween! One of my family's favorite holidays.

My youngest son who is 6 years old was a fighter pilot. I found him a vintage child's jacket that had a ton of old war patches at a local thrift shop. Then on eBay I finally found a vintage military hat that matched the coat perfectly. He just lost his bottom 2 front teeth last week! His first tooth fairy visit too. Kids grow up so fast!

My older son who is 11 was Sasori a member of Akatsuki from the Naruto anime series. I made his costume from scratch without a pattern and boy was it tough! I'm not that great with sewing but I'm getting better and I was really surprised how nice it turned out!

My husband wasn't going to dress up at all.. but the day before Halloween his work decided his department had to participate in the annual costume contest. The people in his department ended up choosing Music Stars of the Past for their theme and tried to talk him into being Billy Idol.. I didn't want him to shave off his beard though so I talked him into being George Michael.. Poor guy! He looked really cute.. hehe.
I didn't have time to put a real costume together for myself this year. I spent way too much time on the Sasori costume. So didn't dress up this year.. well I did wear cat ears, lol.
